The GEM-Flow actively builds partnerships with researchers, national laboratories, and industry partners around the world. Our work addresses global challenges in energy transition, subsurface engineering, and advanced geo-materials, and we strongly believe that impactful research is achieved through open, interdisciplinary, and international collaboration.
We welcome collaboration with academic institutions, research organisations, and industrial partners, ranging from fundamental research projects to applied engineering studies and technology development. Through our experimental facilities, imaging capabilities, and advanced modelling tools, GEM-Flow provides unique opportunities to investigate complex processes in geo-materials and porous systems.
Areas of Collaboration and Expertise:
Our team offers expertise and collaborative opportunities in the following, but not limited to:
Multiphase flow in porous media – experimental and modelling studies of fluid transport, trapping, and reactive processes in complex pore structures.
Geo-energy systems and subsurface storage – including CO₂ geological storage, hydrogen storage, geothermal energy, and subsurface energy storage technologies.
Advanced imaging and digital rock analysis – in situ and 4D X-ray micro-CT imaging, AI-assisted image segmentation, and pore-scale characterisation.
Digital rock physics and multi-scale modelling – pore network modelling, reservoir simulation, and coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical simulations.
Geo-energetic and planetary materials – experimental studies of reactive rocks, cemented systems, and lunar and Martian regolith-based construction materials.
We are particularly interested in collaborative projects involving joint experiments, data-driven modelling, proposal development, and industrial applications related to net-zero energy technologies and sustainable infrastructure. Researchers and organisations interested in collaboration are warmly encouraged to get in touch to explore potential partnerships.
For industry:
Industry-funded research projects: Work with GEM-Flow on a defined research challenge. In some cases, the University/College can provide up to 50% matched funding to support collaborative industry research projects with the University of Glasgow.
Consultancy and technical advisory: We offer rapid, targeted consulting support for industry partners seeking expert input on subsurface flow, geo-materials, imaging, and modelling. This is an efficient route to address time-sensitive technical challenges and de-risk key decisions.
Partnership PhD (new!): The Partnership PhD scheme enables industry employees to undertake a PhD project co-developed with the University of Glasgow and aligned with the company’s R&D priorities. Projects can be delivered part-time, allowing the employee to remain in their role while studying. Fees are typically charged at the standard UK “home” rate (including for international employees in many cases), making this a cost-effective pathway for talent development and innovation.
For Academia:
UKRI proposals (EPSRC / NERC): We are open to joining and co-developing proposals as a partner on EPSRC and NERC funding calls, particularly in areas aligned with porous media flow, geo-energy, subsurface storage, imaging, and multi-scale modelling.
Bilateral and international collaboration schemes: If you are based in the USA, Brazil, Norway, or Germany, there are some specific UK–international agreements and joint funding routes available for collaborative research. Please contact us to discuss suitable schemes and timing.
Horizon Europe / EU consortia: We welcome opportunities to join Horizon Europe and wider EU consortia as a research and technology partner, contributing experimental capability, imaging, AI-assisted analysis, and modelling expertise.
